Cancer and Your Pet

Just say the word cancer and any of a host of undesirable
thoughts will pop in your mind- and with good reason. Cancer is
one of the most common of diseases among pets and increases as
the pet ages.

In dogs, the frequency of getting cancer is equivalent to that
of a human being getting cancer. Additionally, it accounts for
close to half the deaths of pets over the age of 10.

Just what is cancer and what causes it? Basically, cancer
occurs when cell growth rates go out of control on, or inside,
the body. What causes this chaos inside the system of the cell
is still unknown-but the results have been well documented and
the reputation is well known.

Some cancers such as breast cancer, ovarian cancer or testicular
cancer can be largely prevented by spaying or neutering your pet
while it is still very young( 6-12 months or so). Other types,
however, are not as easy to detect, causing difficult preventive
methods.

Following are many common types of cancers seen in pets. Skin
tumors in dogs should always be checked by a vet. Breast cancers
have a high rate of malignancy in dogs- often 50%. Lymphoma is
common and is characterized by an enlargement of the lymph
nodes. Testicular tumors are common in dogs- especially those
having retained testes. Cancers occurring in the head and/or
neck are common in dogs and often malignant. Aggressive and
quick therapy is required. Abdominal tumors are harder to detect
and very common. Watch for weight loss or abdominal enlargement.

Testing for cancer can be done in a variety of methods - from
x-rays or blood tests to actual biopsy samples(tissue samples).
Most often, biopsies are required to diagnose cancer.

Treatments run the gamut in cancer therapy. Since each cancer
may be of a different type from animal to animal, and each
animals system may react differently to the same drug, the care
is highly individualized. Your veterinarian may choose from such
options as chemotherapy, radiation, hyperthermia, surgery,
immuno-therapy, or cryosurgery(freezing) to treat your pet,
although combinations of the above methods are quite common.

Now for the big question. Just what are the success rates of
these methods in treating my pet for cancer? Just as in humans,
the success rate depends on a number of variables- what type of
cancer your pet has, how early you detect the cancer, how you
treat the cancer and how strong your pet is- just to name a few.
Sometimes the cancer can be cured if response is quick and the
treatment aggressive but all pets may receive a better quality
of life from therapy received. The best therapy seems, however,
to be early detection through regular vet visits and keen
knowledge of your pets overall rate of health at all times.
Watch for changes and be aware should any unusual symptoms pop
up.

How to disinfect the bird cage

Before setting the bird into its ” lodging ” you should do something else

Never the less that the bird cage is new , and the perches are ecologically clean , they should be disinfected carefully . I call this operation “carbonation “, because as a “disinfectant” gas for burning is used , and gas for cigarette lighters can be used but it can be quite expensive .

How to proceed :

Wash both the bird cage and the wooden sticks with soap and hot water.

Leave them dry well especially the sticks because they soak with water and drench.

Prepare the gas and a cloth with which to put the gas over the perches and the bird cage. It is compulsory to put gloves ( surgery or household for washing plates ), otherwise you hands will smell awful.

Slightly damp the cloth , but not to drop gas from it , and carefully rub the bird cage everywhere and the perches . Now the bird cage and the perches are absolutely ready to be completed and to put the bird inside .

The disinfection is very useful for the bird because when it steps on the ” carbonated ” perches , a part of the gas gets soaked into its legs and then when scouring themselves it goes on its feathers.

It is good at least once or twice to clean the perches with gas and to change them. That is why I told you in the beginning to provide yourselves with wooden sticks .

To clean the bird cage with gas is more difficult , because you are supposed to have a spare ” lodging ” for the bird, where to put it temporarily . Nothing prevents you from cleaning the bird cage periodically with a cloth damped with gas without washing it with soap .

6 Different Dog breeds you don’t know

Everybody has heard of the basset hound or the beagle. This type
of dogs has proved to have many qualities or has been advertised
a lot. The influence plays also an important role:if one of my
friends. to whom I compete has just bought a pitbull, I should
definitely bring about a Tossain. How about the Polish Owczarek
Nizinny? i know nothing about it so this shouldn’t be my choice.
There are many breeds of dogs left on this planet which prove to
have more qualities, yet, are unpopular. This article will
present you some of these breeds.

The affenpinscher

This is the smallest dog in the breed which also presented us
the schnauzers. The affenpinscher is thought to be the most
suitable for a family pet as it is very intelligent, easy to
train of a good demeanor. They have a dark fur and have always
shown affection to human beings.

The anatolian Shepherd

This dog breed is of a medium size and has proved to be very
courageous. This breed is very powerful and loyal and it is used
in U.S.A especially for military and hunting purposes.

The basenji

The dogs from this breed are medium sized muscular dogs and are
also named the Africa Barkless Dogs. What is funny is that they
ever bark because they don’t want to do so as researches have
shown they are not mute. They are extremely known in Africa for
their hunting skills. They are not suitable as family pets but
their aversion to humans can be diminished if they are handled
properly from an early age.

The Bouvier des Flandres

This small and steady dog breed is somewhat similar to the
terrier one . Their fur is generally in dark shades and they
have proved to be very calm. At the beginning they were bred as
herders in France but nowadays they are used for police and
military purposes, as well as guidance for blind persons.

The central Asian Ovtcharka

The Central Asian Ovtcharka includes only large and muscular
dogs. They appear to be very loyal and fearless dogs with strong
protective instincts which makes them being used as watchdogs.
As any other large dog they have their ears and tail cut from an
early age.

The Polish Owczarek Nizinny

This dog is of a medium size muscular dog with a long fur which
covers its eyes. It can be used as a family pet, being very
loyal, yet they shouldn’t be left alone because they are
notorious for the ‘disasters’

they cause in this situation.

All in all what we do know is that many dog breeds are not so
famous but they prove to have some qualities which cannot be
surpassed. They may be great hunters or family pets; the idea is
that we should pay much attention to them as they are really
fantastic.
