Mind the Game

Poker is more than just a game of cards. Poker is a mind game that involves complex psychology. Experienced players know this because practice has made them more aware of the subtle nuances, thinking and manipulation that make up the game.

To win at poker, one always has to think about what the players are thinking. Seasoned players know how to change their behavior and engage in tactics that lead their opponents to draw wrong conclusions and make mistakes.

In a game that draws good players, the thinking and strategy transcends the cards, with the players focused on “playing the player” instead. Good players observe the actions of others to identify other players’ starting hand ranges, propensity to bluff and slow play.

Playing poker at the mind game level means you try to influence your opponent’s thinking. You should try to make your opponents mistakenly think they know what you have at the casino. Continuation bets and raising are the only way you can convince an opponent you have them beat, even though you are bluffing.

When you run up against opponents who strictly play according to their cards, without thinking about the players are holding or thinking, it is difficult to manipulate their reactions. They will go to the river and sometimes make the bad beat. With these players, you have to adhere to solid poker and only play premium cards, and look for lucky opportunities.
