A New Pair of Shoes

Do the New

An old pair of shoes

Do you have a really comfortable pair of shoes? They may be slippers or tennis shoes. It doesn’t matter what kind of shoes, just so comfortable that you can slip into them like an old habit. These are the kind of shoes that you can’t wait to get into after a hard day of work. Like Mr. Rogers slipping on his blue pair of Keds. Won’t you be my neighbor?

I have a pair of shoes like that. They are so comfortable that I could probably fall asleep in them. And that may be the problem.

A new pair of shoes

Do you remember when you were a kid and got the new pair of tennis shoes? I bet you felt like you could run faster and jump higher when you put them on. We recently bought my son a new pair of Batman tennis shoes. He took off! I didn’t even have to wind him up.

How do you feel when you are dressed to the hilt and you are wearing a brand new pair of quality dress shoes? You are invincible aren’t you?

Comfortable habits like comfortable shoes are nice to have, but I want to encourage you to try on a new pair of shoes every once in a while. Trying something new, like a new pair of shoes, may be uncomfortable at first, but it will make you feel like you can run faster, jump higher and be just plain invincible.

If this new thing stretches your comfort zone and your imagination, do it. If this new thing is a little uncomfortable, do it. If this new thing ir very uncomfortable, do it NOW!

No one ever grew by staying put and staying comfortable. Go get a new pair of shoes today.

Universal Broadband Program Already Shrouded by Controversies

Filed under:Best Technology Resources, Buyers + Consumers, Cell Phones — posted on April 29, 2009 @ 11:24 am

For long, the broadband industry has been speculating on the government’s funding plans to support the ambitious “Broadband for All” project. Alistair Darling while making the budget announcement claimed that the government will be lending its support to implementation of the Digital Britain project. However, the details of the funding plan have left several industry observers dissatisfied.

According to Charles Trotman, head of rural business development of Country Land and Business Association and a leading broadband expert, the biggest drawback of this fund allocation would be that the industry will not receive the pledged money before 2012, the year in which the project is supposed to be completed.

Speaking to The Guardian, Trotman emphatically stated that there is growing confusion in the minds of the broadband fraternity about the amount that the government would be releasing for the ambitious project. The government is planning to divert the savings from its digital TV switchover program to the universal broadband project. However, it is not clear as to what the total value of funding through this route would be, and whether it would reach the budget estimate of £250 million.

CEO of Point Topic, a broadband analysis firm, Oliver Johnson pointed out that the £250 million offered by the UK government for the project is much smaller a sum as compared to the funds allocated for similar projects by the US ($9 billion) and Australian (A$22 billion) governments. Although he insisted that he would rather wait for the final report from Lord Carter before judging the project’s feasibility.

Two Leadership Traps: How To Avoid Them and How To Get Out Of Them (Part 2)

Here’s how to get out of, or avoid, the “I need … ” trap. It simply involves changing what you think and what you say in very simple ways.

In my working with leaders worldwide for more than two decades, I’ve noticed a character trait that the most successful share: They focus consistently on understanding and supporting the people whom they lead.

For instance, you could say, “You need …” which is a good way out.
Or, you could say, “The team needs … ” which is a better way out.

Or, you could say, “Do you need? …” Which is the best way out, especially with a question mark attached. A corollary to this question is, “What do you need from me to help you get the team to succeed?”

Asking a question rather than using a declarative is often more effective because it gets people reflecting upon their situation. After all, we can’t motivate anyone to do anything. They have to motivate themselves. And they best motivate themselves when they reflect on their character and their situation.

A question can trigger such reflection and ultimately lead to their making the choice to be motivated to be your cause leader. You may not like the answer; but often their answer, no matter what it is, can better lead to more results being achieved than your declaration can.

Furthermore, asking questions like, “What do you need for the team to succeed? …” works much better than saying “I need … ” because you are forging a “critical confluence” - the confluence of your or your organization’s needs with their needs.

You may think I’m putting too fine a point on these changes; and to a degree, you’d be right. Making simply one change may not be important; but when you multiple the changes many times during the day, day in and day out, month in and month out, their aggregate can add up to tremendous change indeed. In fact, it can add up to job and career transformation.

So, the next time you are tempted to say, “I need … “, don’t. Instead, say, “Do you need? …” or “What do you need? … ” Over time, you’ll forge great changes in how people relate to you and your leadership, changes that will lead to substantial increases in results.

However, watch out: In getting out of the “I need …” trap, you may find yourself in another trap. Asking “What do you need? …” might play right into their hands of people who don’t’ trust you or want to sabotage your leadership or use you to further their own ends. Such people want to lead you down their private rabbit hole. They want to get you exploring things that have nothing to do with your getting the results you need and everything to do with satisfying the needs of their ego or whatever agenda they have. “Don’t you think you need? … ” could be their ticket to ride. Before you ask the question, be aware of the ride and how to get off.

THE SECOND TRAP. The “You do … ” trap. Most leaders miss a great opportunity that presents itself to them daily. Since leadership is all about having people take action that gets results, it’s important to understand the kind of action people should take to get the best results. You can ensure it is the best kind of action by challenging people not simply to do a job but to take leadership of that job. After all, there’s a big difference between people doing and leading; and when you are constantly saying, “You do … ” you are missing out on getting a lot more results.

Now that you know how to avoid two leadership traps, you’ll find that your career will be boosted in many marvelous ways.

Medical casting (Medical Podcasting) is a big step towards the evolution of on-demand medical information delivery, making it accessible, informative, useful and appealing. This mix presents the medical industry with a very unique opportunity to reach its community through this new medium

“Medcasting” is the commercial application of podcasting for medical related institutions. Medcasting is the distribution and publishing of audio and video feeds, that offer medical information delivered over the Internet, for on demand listening. The flexibility of this medium is what will drive the growth of Medical casting tremendously over the next few years.

Currently the most useful application for medical institutions looking to make the public aware of its information is to compliment already existent informational web pages. Most institutions have numerous web pages which deliver medical information in text format, by providing an audio or video link on that page it gives the user a different and potentially more effective format for receiving the information.

In addition, the expectation is that the medical podcasting services can used to deliver updates to on new medicines or applications from drug companies who would appreciate the opportunity to present their information in a useful and appealing format.

When a Doctor attaches his iPod to his computer, the program issues a request for new audio files which may have been posted recently which correspond to his profile. The resulting files are downloaded automatically, and the Doctor is always up to date on the latest information. With one-click you can subscribe to a Medical Podcast that you are interested in.

Additional formats that are being used consist of; medical talk shows, where various specialists within each institution will speak or answer questions on a certain topic. Medical lectures and seminars can be recorded and made available for the public or employees to download easily and on-demand. In addition, any information that may need to be delivered to employees can be recorded and made available on an in-house delivery network. For institutions that have thousands of employees, the distribution of company information is very important, and once again this offers each institution a method of on-demand delivery which is convenient to all. Medcasting can also be used as a direct line of communication, by recording video-casts of company messages from executives for company wide distribution.

There are numerous uses for medcasting currently, and over the next few years it will explode in popularity. It is beneficial to institutions as well as the consumer, and it will be seen as a great tool in any medical organizations’ operations.

Online Games of Fortune Keep Gambling Devotees Indoors

The Ethics of Divination - Choosing Your Seer

Professionals have their regulatory bodies and codes of practice, but individuals involved in mystical work are often self taught. This can leave them feeling they are in something of a black hole when it comes to dealing with the public appropriately. From the point of view of the client, it makes it difficult to know who to choose for a reading.

Ethical principles should guide all practitioners of the divinatory arts, whatever their field. Talking with a group of astrologers confirmed for me that the same types of problems face all “readers” whose clients have come seeking advice: dealing with difficult questions; the possibility of tragic events; what to do when people have depression or issues they cannot handle alone, and especially, avoiding dependency and the pressure it places on the practitioner. It is dependency on the reader that I will discuss here and how readers and their clients can avoid the problem.

Initially, I would say, be clear about motives. As a practitioner, I think the best position is to have a set of strong values with regard to your work that accord with your spiritual perspective. Being a person who tries to live her life by Buddhist teachings I ask myself, “What is my motivation in doing this kind of work?” The answer that initially springs to mind is to help others by giving them the insights gleaned from a reading, but it is more than that. It is to empower others to choose for themselves how to deal more effectively with problems in their lives by giving them information. Encouraging clients to become dependent on more and more readings is not ethical.

Client dependency usually occurs when people have a simplistic view of divination. They believe that a reading reveals “Fate” - a future written in tablets of stone that cannot be avoided. They see themselves in the role of puppets on a stage where larger forces are pulling the strings. If they get the “wrong answer” to their queries then real stress can result and clients can pressure readers to tell them what they want to hear by asking the same question again and again, until they get the “right” answer. It’s easy to forget how much the client invests in what a reader says and how careful readers need to be when faced with someone overwhelmed by life problems.

The Tarot cards show potentials, trends and possibilities for a person at any one time. At no stage does that person lose their free will. Readers need to show clients how they have choices and need to be proactive in their lives. “If you follow this path, then X may occur. If you follow that path then Y is more likely”. Does anybody get a new job or a new romance if they don’t make some moves towards their goal? A good reading should show ways of making desirable changes.

If you are a client looking for a reader who can give you real insight into your possibilities then you should be looking for someone who has the insight to explain things in this way. At no time should you feel you have lost control of your choices. The purpose of divination is to seek guidance not intimidation. Both “seers” and clients need to adopt an exploratory frame of mind in a reading rather than a predictive one and clients should ask, when they book a reading, “How do you work? Is there only one answer to a problem or am I free to explore the possibilities open to me?”

A Blueprint for Leadership - How to Be a Better Leader

If you were to build a house, you would begin with a blueprint. This blueprint proves useful because it contains more than directions on how to build a house. It also describes the finished house.

So, what does this have to do with leadership?

Last month I asked an audience of leaders to tell me the characteristics of an ideal
leader. Their answers were (in the order collected):

A good listener, enthusiasm, passion, shows appreciation, a visionary, role model,
trusting, integrity, organized, knowledgeable, credibility, persuasive, charisma,
team building, clarity of purpose, problem solver, attitude of service, leads by
example, patience, willing to act without complete knowledge, understands
followers, consistent, empowers other people, and adapts to change.

I’ll add that this is essentially the same list that I receive from other audiences when
I ask this question. From this comes some useful insights.

1) Notice what the list contains. All of these characteristics relate to the human side
of leadership. That’s interesting because I often hear people minimize this side of
leadership with terms like “soft” or “touchy feely.” Actually, applying these
characteristics requires more strength than not.

2) Notice what the list excludes. Absent from this list (and all lists from other
programs) are characteristics such as stern, mean, serious, short tempered,
vindictive, tough, angry, harsh, punitive, controlling, violent, or ruthless. And that’s
interesting because many popular representations of leadership emphasize at least
one of these “hard” characteristics. In fact, these characteristics are the refuge of
those who lack the strength (or the skills) to apply the human side of leadership.

3) How about you? How would you rate yourself as a leader compared to the list of
positive characteristics? If you were to survey the people who report to you, how
would they describe your leadership? Would they list characteristics from the “soft”
list or from the “hard” list? Could you become more effective by improving upon any
of the “soft” characteristics? And how about the other leaders in your organization?
Do they truly maximize human potential?

People want leaders who treat them with genuine compassion, courtesy, and
respect. They want leaders who help them become more successful. They want
leaders who inspire them with a vision for a better world and show them how to go
there.

Leadership is About Growing Others - It’s Not About You!

Filed under:World Of Management — posted on @ 6:41 am

“Before you become a leader success is all about growing yourself. Once you become a leader success is all about growing others.” Jack Welch (1935- ) Former Chairman & CEO, General Electric”

In my opinion this sums up leadership 100% correctly, and also explains why some people can be very good at what they do, and why they will never become a true leader. Leadership is all about self-sacrifice, not worrying about who gets the credit for what idea, and is not about how good the leader looks to the person they report to.

By focusing on the people served, and not being self-serving, someone can quickly grow in leadership, though his/her formal title may not change.

If you want to continue to serve yourself, don’t fool yourself into thinking you can lead others to action, though you might be able to lead them in competition.

An open question for all leaders, and want to be leaders: How are you helping those around you learn, grow and do more?

Follow-up question: What are you doing that is holding back those who report to you from growing and learning more?

As Zig Ziglar says, If you help enough people get what they want, eventually you’ll get what you want.
